Trilogy: Destiny in Disguise

A historical fiction trilogy that follows the life and times of the Johnson family. Burton Johnson works around Murimbulla and meets and falls in love with Marion Stewart. They start a family in 1914 but find the life difficult. Burton discovers an advertisement in a newspaper seeking men to grow a dairy in the inhospitable environment of the Daintree Wilderness.

Against his father-in-law’s advice and the clever wishes of Marion’s mother the family set out for the Daintree.

Book 1, Destination Daintree, takes the reader through the family’s adventures as they trek over two thousand miles. Marion is happy to bring her first five children with her. Upon reaching Rockhampton the heavily pregnant Marion gives birth to her sixth child, a boy they call Max.

Less than six days later the entire family catch a ferry that lands them in the Daintree River. As they move slowly upstream the captain of the ferry tells them of the dangers of the river and even demonstrates these through scare tactics.

The family find their new dairy farm well up the Stewart Creek well stocked for dairying and with a farm house to live in. The nine members sit in contented with their new life.

Nine family members? They found a sixteen year old boy who had set out from London to start a new life.  The Johnsons’ accepted Ginger’s hand of help and friendship. He was to become a hard worker and fell in love with the eldest Johnson in the name of Madeline.

Book 2, Destination Reflections, is a wander by the family through the dangers, fun and frolic working and living in the Daintree. There are four more children, all girls, added to the family. They existed from 1926 to 1936 in the Daintree playing those wonderful games of those years. The game of rounders ended in the dunny with a frantic search at the bottom of the long drop!

The family left the Daintree after a tragic episode and Burton declared that the Devil had caste such horror over them all. He had to leave and Ginger also left mourning a loss.

Book 3, Beyond the Daintree, brings the two younger boys clashing over truth and lies. Their animosity festers and one is let down by his parents to the point where he deserts the family. The family and police from the Missing Peoples’ Bureau hunt throughout Queensland when stories and parts of a motorcycle keep being reported. Which Max was dead, which was alive was the question on everyone’s lips. Only one young lady is able to determine the answer. She herself has major problems and has had to escape her father and his illegal activities.

“When are you writing your next novel? The first  two of the triology Destiny in Disguise left me expectant. Looking forward to Book 3 ‘Daintree and Beyond’.

Deb rated it it as amazing. When I was reading this book it was like being among the characters in the story. I shared their ups and downs, their successes and failures, their joys and tragedies. The book captured me and moved me emotionally. It is amazing to think this book is based on a real family in the 1920s and 30s.

This story was very compelling and I kept you wanting to know more about this family and their struggles and triumphs. A very intriguing look into the hardships of our pioneer families and the true meaning of family, love, loyalty and resilience. Can't wait for the second instalment.

An entertaining recount of a real family interspersed with factual conversations educating the reader about Australian wildlife and outback life.
